Feline Urethrostomy

This disease in cats has an extremely reduced incidence with the diet modifications that have been employed. The number of animals having this procedure has decreased significantly. Perineal urethrostomies are most often needed in animals that have undergone traumatic catheterizations or repeated catheterizations for unblocking the plugged urethra. The procedure employed was first described in the early '70s and has been very successful in removing the penile urethral and opening the larger pelvic urethra to the perineum. Stricture complications are rare and usually fixable if they occur (see position papers).
