OCD of the Shoulder

Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the shoulder is a form osteochondrosis. Growth of the epiphysis occurs by endochondral ossification in the sub-articular area. Osteochondrosis results in thickening of the articular cartilage in certain areas of the epiphysis with necrotic chondrocytes being seen. This can lead to articular separation from the sub-articular epiphyseal bone as a cleft (necrosis) develops under the thickened cartilage.

Osteochondritis dissecans is seen in large breed dogs (Labrador Retriever and Rottweiler) 4-8 months old. Joint disomfort is best demonstrated during the examination by hyerextension of the joint (forward stretching) pulling the caudal joint capsule in contact with the inflamed flap area. The disease can be bilateral.
