Feline Hyperthyroidism

This disease is best treated with radioactive Iodine injections. The treatment requires special centers equipped to handle radioactive material. Surgery is not used as much anymore but is still a viable option for these animals. Bilateral extracapsular thyroidectomies are employed. Extracapsular parathyroids are identified and saved. Intracapsular parathyroids can often be identified and salvaged for reimplantation for additional supply of parathormone. Post operative hypoparathyroidism is a very rare complication. Ectopic thyroid tissue continuing to cause disease is a recognized but very rare complication also.
