Feline Megacolon Anastamosis

The anastamosis is between the cap of the colon containing the ileo-colic orifice and the remaining colorectal segment. The colon is removed as close to the pelvic brim as possible. Enough colorectal tissue must be left for a safe anastamosis. Simple interrupted Gambee sutures of 2-O PDS are used for the anastamosis. An omental wrap supports the anastamosis. Clinically these animals are continent since the anal sphincter is not involved in the surgery at all. You will notice however that cats will have urgency issues for the first week after surgery. They know what is coming but often cannot get to the litter box fast enough and you will find accidents close to the litter box. These will subside as the animal begins to understand the new situation. Feces often remain "cow pie" in consistency. Medical therapy can often be discontinued. Recurrence and enlargement of the remaining colorectal section is a very rare complication.
